Our number 9 pick of the top ten tourism experiences or things to do in Karangsem is Whitewater Rafting. In the Karangasem Regency, whitewater rafting is concentrated around the town of Rendang on the Sunggai (River) Telaga Waja. Telaga Waja River is a Class III and IV rapids river.
A number of operators provide whitewater rafting experiences. These include Alam Rafting, Bukit Cilli Rafting, Bali Adventure Rafting, Bali International Rafting, Bali View Rafting, Bali Bagus Rafting, Mega Rafting, and Telaga Waja Rafting Sobek. The package usually includes pick up and return to your accommodation. Of course, you can arrange your own transport. Lunch is also an option for inclusion in the rafting package.
To get to Rendang, you travel up the road between Klungkung and Rendang via Bukid Jambul or Klungkung to Rendang via Sidemen to Rendang. The latter road while quite scenic can be somewhat slower because of the truck traffic. So if you are running late, it is probably better to go via Bukid Jambul. This road is is also very scenic.
On the drive up and back from Rendang you will be treated to some spectacular views. There are several stopping points where you can take wonderful photos of the terraced rice paddies.
You will also pass through villages going about their everyday life. Your car may be stopped to allow a Ngaben (cremation) procession to pass.
Or you may see a temple procession in progress. You never know what you will come across. It’s always a surprise and there is so much to see.
At the Rafting Staging Point
Once you arrive at the rafting staging point, the rafting guides will welcome you and set you up with your equipment – helmet, paddle and life jacket.
After safety instructions at the assembly area, you will then walk down a track to the river where you will enter your raft and receive further instruction from your rafting guide.
On the Telaga Waja River
After the final instructions, then it’s into the raft and you are away. The sides of the river canyons are spectacular and the scenery is breath-taking. And then of course, there is the rafting adventure itself, going between boulders, around tight bends, over rapids and the occasional water fight with other rafters.
Midway you can have a break and a refresh under a cooling waterfall. Then it is off again to complete the rest of the rafting adventure. It ends with a surprising experience – no more to be said – you need to go experience it yourself.
Once you complete the rafting, you are rewarded with a walk up the river side to showers and lunch if you took the lunch inclusive package. Then, it’s off back down the road to your accommodation. And even though it may be the same road you came up, you will see people doing different things because of the time of day. So look out for photo opportunities along the way.
