There are a number of options for trekking and the degree of difficulty of treks needs to be discussed with your trekking or tour provider. Regardless of where you trek, remember to wear good shoes or sports sandals, use a hat and sunscreen, and take water. Check if you need to take food. Trekking in Karagasem includes treks up river valleys from Amed and Tulamben; treks on Bukit (Hill) Belibis or to Pura Lempuyang in north east Karangasem; a variety of treks from Candidasa; Labuan Amuk; and Padang Bai; as well as local area treks adjacent to accommodation sites.

There are two primary starting points for a trek to Gungung Agung. One is from Pura Besakih and the other is from Pura Pasar Gunung.

Starting from Pura Besakih, the return trek to the top of Agung will take approximately 12 hours. From Pura Pasar Gunung, the return trek takes approximately 8 hours. These are hard treks and commence around midnight in order to reach the top by sunrise and return by mid afternoon.

Around Candidasa, Labuan Amuk, Padang Bai

Around Candidasa, tours include Bukit Gumang, Gumang Hill, to Pantai Putih, White Sand Beach; Kastala to Tenganan; Gumang to Candidasa temple trek; Labuan Amuk to Padangbai; and treks to the hills behind Labuan Amuk and Padang Bai.

A popular trek is the Kastala to Tenganan trek, which takes you through rice paddies, along paths that provide great tropical vistas.
